My Cousin Nancy DeLoye Fitroy grew up in Lanesborough, MA located in Berkshire County. She graduated in 1945 from Pittsfield (MA) High School and was a drum majorette. She was accepted at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the Fall of that same year. My cousin Nancy was the first woman to graduate from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1949 having earned a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering.
That same year she went on to graduate as the first woman to earn a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from RPI.
In 1952 she was hired by GE Research Laboratory. The first person to be hired without having a Ph.d., she later became a fixed wing pilot and also a member of the Whirly Girls who were helicopter pilots.
Nancy later became the first woman to be elected Vice President of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1981. Nancy, in 1985, became the first woman president of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
